"Rosemary Yamo Triumphs Over Adversity to Graduate"

Updated: Sep 29

Congratulations, dear Rosemary!! You certainly make us proud. Rosemary graduated yesterday from Eagerton University. Here is her incredible story:

"Hello, I am Rosemary Yamo. I was born in Yimbo, Western Kenya, in a family of 10 children. Unfortunately, seven of my siblings died and we remained only 3 girls. My dear mother passed away in 2004 as well, while I was in pre-primary. Later, my dad remarried, but unfortunately also died in 2013, just one month before I sat for my Kenya Certificate of Primary Education. I was now left with my stepmom and my two older sisters, who had already married. Despite the sadness and hardship, I finished my Primary Education in 2013 with 337 marks.

Thanks to this good result, I received an invitation letter to join Nyamira Girls Secondary School, but obviously my dear stepmom couldn't afford the school fees. She earned very little from charcoal burning and firewood selling. Luckily, I heard about Teach a Child - Africa (TaC) and applied for a scholarship. I was indeed selected and awarded a full scholarship for four years of secondary schooling. TaC always paid my school fees, looked after me and made me comfortable at school. I finished secondary school by scoring a B plain of 65 points in 2017.

Later, I joined Egerton University to pursue a Bachelor of science in Agricultural education and extension. I am the first girl in my family to have gone to university. Yesterday, on 27th October 2023, I graduated from university with a second-class upper division. Currently, I am employed as a teacher at Lari Boys’ school in Kiambu. I would like to appreciate TaC for their endless support throughout my academic journey. I can finally see the light at the end of the tunnel – and I am hoping to support others in the future too."
